Jessie McGuire-Dent was one of the 22 original founding members of the illustrious organization, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., established in 1913 on the campus of Howard University. Jessie McGuire-Dent was also a founding member of the Galveston Alumnae Chapter, chartered in 1941. Jessie McGuire-Dent was a graduate of Central High School and earned her teaching degree from Howard University. She taught Latin and later became the Dean of Girls at Central High School. Mrs. Dent, the plaintiff for equal pay for African-American teachers in the Galveston Independent School District, won her case on June 15, 1943, giving African-American teachers equal pay starting in the September 1943 school year. In August 1999, the City of Galveston named its newest recreation center, McGuire-Dent.
